Valentine’s Day Family Portrait Special

Valentines day was originally a Pagan Roman Festival of fertility (Eve of Lupercalia) before it was co-opted by Pope Gelasius in the 5th century into a feast day…So why not get a fertility portrait session for Valentines Day. A photo of the whole clan. A valentine’s day collage. Or a couple’s portrait, or even a boudoir session for your sweetie. Capture the passion, the intimate bond between a couple and a family. Valentine’s Day specials all month! And of course my studio is LGBTQ friendly. Contact me for more info.

Julianne finds and releases an OWL in Santa Fe, NM.

My friend Julianne Parkinson had an awesome visitation from a Northern saw-whet owl – (This doll-like species is a demure 6-8 inches long and is one of the smallest owls found in North America. These creatures earned their name because their call is reminiscent of a saw being sharpened on a whetstone.)

Anyway her cat brought the owl into her house and Julianne quickly called the Espanoa Wild Life Center rescue folks who came, treated the owl in their facility, and were ready to release her in 7 day’s time. They returned to Julianne’s neighborhood for the release and I was privileged to watch and photograph this magical and mystical event. Hope you enjoy the shots….

Capturing Essence in Photography: 2016 Year in Review

Thanks to you my clients, this has been an amazing year for Daniel Quat Photography. It's not only growing as more and more people discover what it's like to have their essence portrayed in their portrait but I've had the honor and privilege of teaching "Capturing Essence" to children (12-15 years old) at Camino De Paz, the Montessori Farm school in Espanola, as well as teaching a class for adults in my studio. I've photographed so many exciting shoots including Horse jumping and dressage events, An aerialist in Tijeras dancing on the silks off a cliff, a Flamenco Dancer at La Mesita Ranch in Santa Fe, plus photographing many different subjects, always with the goal of 'capturing essence' not just taking a picture.

What does that mean? Google's on line dictionary says: "Essence is the intrinsic nature or indispensable quality of something, especially something abstract, that determines its character.?" We may not fully understand what is essence, but we can recognize it when we see it.

In portrait photography it's capturing the deeper nature of the subject--often their passion for life. In event photography, it's capturing the joy or purpose of the event--seen thru the eyes and attitudes of the participants. In equine photography, it's capturing the spirit of the horse and rider. In dance photography, it's capturing the joy and passion inherent in the performer...You get it right?

Randy Miller and Bonnie Bennett dancing in the Photography Studio of Santa Fe Photographer, Daniel Quat

I’m honored to be included in Trend Magazines Look Book 2017 Winter issue. Trend arguably the best magazine of its kind in New Mexico and the west and arguably in the US, invited me to show 10 pages of my images. I’ve chosen some from the on going series “Artists In Motion” which is also the name of a page on my website. The images I selected show a variety of artists–Nia and Soul Motion instructors, yoga teachers, and Flamenco Performers. In this issue of Trend I’m in the company of some other consummate professionals: Robert Reck, Peter Ogilvie and Eric Swanson to name just a few. The spread features photo shoots with Randy Miller and Bonnie Bennett (Nia Teachers), Viktoria Shushan (yoga) and Emily Grimm (Flamenco)….Click this link to view the 10 page spread. TrendQuatFeature

Margo Spellman and Bryan Tagas Launch Eldorado Living

Big Party last night at the Eldorado community center. Lone Pinion Serenaded us with their beautiful music. Peas in the Pods catered with delicious hors d’oeuvres. Music played and people wined and dined as the Sunset with a magnificent warm glow…Luisa Kolker, psychologist-shaman, the cover story for the October issue (stay tuned to see this cover) was there and Gershon Siegel (the writer for the story) and Daniel Quat the photographer of the story. Obie the cactus project founder was there as were Scott and Elizabeth Christopher, Gila Joy Pascale, and Susan Latham…So many friends in the community and many people I didn’t know. I’m proud to be the principle photographer for the magazine. Laurianne Fiorentino was the resident photographer for the evening, but I managed to snap a few images with my iphone 6.
